VUILD's Prewood modular timber building demonstrates adaptable urban architecture in Tokyo

Architecture firm VUILD has completed Prewood, a compact timber building in Tokyo's Nihonbashi-Kayabacho district. The structure occupies a narrow urban site using a modular construction system of disassemblable wooden components. Designed with vertical cedar facades and split-level interiors, the project maximizes space within tight constraints while addressing fire safety regulations with cross-laminated timber. Completed in 2025, the building serves as an example of sustainable urban timber construction that can be relocated to extend material lifespan. Engineering support was provided by Arup, with construction by Atelier Umi.
