Voodoo Voodoo Develops Visual Identity for Architecture Firm Moreau Kusunoki
In November 2022, Berlin-based creative studio Voodoo Voodoo completed a new visual identity system for the architecture practice Moreau Kusunoki. The Franco-Japanese firm was established in 2011 by architects Nicolas Moreau and Hiroko Kusunoki, both of whom have backgrounds at prominent firms including SANAA, Kengo Kuma, and Shigeru Ban. Moreau Kusunoki has gained recognition through competition wins for projects such as the Guggenheim Helsinki proposal, Sciences Po's Paris campus, the National Lighthouse Museum in Brest, and the Powerhouse Parramatta Museum in Sydney. The studio's design philosophy centers on blending Japanese and French cultural influences, emphasizing detailed craftsmanship and contextual sensitivity. Voodoo Voodoo's identity work draws from the Japanese concept of 'Ma,' which refers to intervals or negative space that create pauses and structure. This concept informs a visual language built on dualities like proximity and distance, partial and complete views, and contrasts of light and shadow. The comprehensive identity system includes printed materials like stationery and organizational assets, digital applications, and a website developed with London studio LeCollective. Specialty printing was handled by UK firm Baddeley Brothers using GF Smith papers. Creative direction was led by Catarina Pereira of Voodoo Voodoo, which operates as a flexible collective undertaking research-based design projects. The studio also runs the interview platform TONGUES, founded in 2020, which highlights unconventional perspectives.
