Vogue's New Column Tackles Funeral Etiquette with Jill Kargman and Frank E. Campbell's President

Vogue has launched a new monthly column titled Oh, Behave! that explores evolving social etiquette. The first installment focuses on funeral etiquette, featuring two New Yorkers with contrasting perspectives: Jill Kargman, novelist, essayist, and creator of Odd Mom Out, who favors a glam goth aesthetic, and Bill Villanova, president of Frank E. Campbell, Manhattan's storied funeral home that has served Jackie Kennedy Onassis, John Lennon, Joan Rivers, and Whitney Houston. The column addresses modern dilemmas such as attire (black is recommended, jeans are discouraged unless at a destination celebration of life), the appropriateness of logos and provocative clothing, wearing sunglasses indoors, children's participation, pets at funerals, attending services for people you lost touch with, phone usage (phones should be silenced and put away), acknowledging grief, sending flowers versus other gifts, late condolence messages, texting condolences, taking selfies, posting about the deceased on social media, liking memorial posts, and remembering anniversaries. Both agree that funerals are for the living and that showing up and acknowledging loss is paramount. Kargman's essay collection Sprinkle Glitter on My Grave is being adapted for film.
