Vitalik Buterin Unveils 'Lean Ethereum' Roadmap, Biggest Overhaul Since the Merge

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined a multi-year 'Lean Ethereum' initiative, described as the protocol's biggest overhaul since the 2022 Merge. The roadmap, shared in a July 4, 2026 post on X, follows a Berlin researcher gathering and a revised draft 'strawmap' at strawmap.org. Lean Ethereum is a series of improvements over three to four years, touching nearly every protocol layer while minimizing disruption to existing applications. Key priorities include quantum resistance, now urgent, with work on quantum-resistant 'blobs' already underway; privacy elevated to a 'first-class goal' with default private transactions; and a major data storage overhaul introducing a cheaper, restrictive tier for simpler use cases, potentially reducing fees tenfold. Verification will rely on recursive STARKs, and Buterin floated simplified consensus and multidimensional gas pricing. Longer term, Ethereum may adopt a virtual machine beyond the EVM, with RISC-V and leanISA as candidates. The upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade will deliver near-term capacity, followed by Hegotá, likely the last fork before the Lean era. The roadmap follows the Ethereum Foundation's restructuring, cutting ~54 staff (20%) and ~40% budget, with departed researchers forming EthLabs, backed by Bitmine and SharpLink. Buterin framed Ethereum's values as 'CROPS' (censorship resistance, open source, privacy, security). ETH traded around $1,780 at publication.
