Vincent Van Duysen Designs Julian Modular Sofa System for Molteni&C

Vincent Van Duysen has created the Julian modular sofa system for the Italian furniture company Molteni&C. The design features monolithic modules that are both spacious and deep, with layered back pillows and cushions providing enhanced lumbar support. A distinctive element is the contrasting piping that decorates the sofa. According to Molteni&C, the back cushions support the overall composition, highlighting a double cushioning system where a thinner second layer adds lightness and an embracing feel. This layer also echoes the contrasting stitching, reinforcing visual continuity. The designer, Vincent Van Duysen, described the approach as considering every detail, guided by the idea that one moves around the sofa as one would a sculpture. He noted that the contrasting profile defines its rhythm, captures the gaze, and reveals subtle construction details. The system's modularity allows it to adapt to various spatial confines, fitting compactly in intimate areas or sprawling across larger ones. Users can select from multiple upholstery options, including fabric or leather for both the cushions and the piping. The product was featured in Dezeen Showroom, an affordable space for brands to launch new products to Dezeen's global audience.
