Van Gogh's 'L'Arlesiana' on Loan to Perugia for Summer 2026 Exhibition

From July 2 to September 27, 2026, the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria in Perugia will host Vincent van Gogh's 'L'Arlesiana' (1890), on loan from the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome. The painting is the centerpiece of the exhibition 'Van Gogh e gli Italiani a Parigi. L'Arlesiana tra i ritratti femminili del secondo Ottocento,' which explores the evolution of female portraiture in late 19th-century European art. The show contextualizes van Gogh's work alongside sixteen works by Italian artists Giovanni Boldini, Giuseppe De Nittis, Silvestro Lega, and Antonio Mancini, loaned by the Museo dell'Ottocento di Pescara – Fondazione Di Persio Pallotta. Multimedia installations and video projections on the museum's third floor provide immersive context on van Gogh's life and artistic milieu. The exhibition highlights stylistic affinities and divergences between van Gogh and Italian painters who converged in Paris, a hub of artistic experimentation. 'L'Arlesiana' depicts Madame Ginoux, a recurring subject in van Gogh's late work, and exemplifies his expressive use of color and brushwork.
