Valerie Hegarty's Destructive Installation Reanimates Emily Cole's Floral Works at Thomas Cole Site

The Thomas Cole National Historic Site in Catskill, New York, is currently showcasing Valerie Hegarty's installation, 'Emily Cole and Valerie Hegarty: Life Cycles,' which will be on display until December 2026. Hegarty's piece, 'Emily Cole and Her Father, My Mother and Me,' offers a fresh perspective on Emily Cole's childhood bedroom, incorporating a deteriorating rendition of Thomas Cole's renowned painting. This installation includes elements such as flowers overtaking the painted surface, a tree trunk intruding through the canvas, and paper-mâché robins. Emily Cole (1843-1913) produced over 100 floral artworks, many of which are part of the museum's collection. Hegarty's approach highlights themes of decay and impermanence, contrasting sharply with Cole's delicate style. The installation, measuring 96 x 144 x 18 inches, is owned by Richard T. Sharp, with an article contributed by Bill Arning.
