V&A East Learning and Engagement Assistant Reflects on a Year of Community Building

The V&A East Museum was inaugurated in April 2026, coinciding with a 12-month placement for a Community Engagement Assistant within the Learning and Engagement team, just prior to the first anniversary of the V&A East Storehouse. The assistant's narrative emphasizes initiatives aimed at involving local residents during the area's redevelopment. The Robin Hood Gardens legacy project, spearheaded by Afia Yeboah and Ben Selig, partnered with past residents to create the publication Robin Hood: The Arts of Occupation, which was unveiled at a gallery event featuring artist David Hepher. Asma Begum oversees the People, Home and Housing walk program. Ideas Exchange is set to return in October 2026, while Making Sound took place from April to September with Ruff Sqwad Arts Foundation. Makers Day 2026 attracted 1,075 participants. Community Survey results indicate that ethnic global majority and lower socioeconomic groups frequent museums less than the average.
