Orban, a Eurosceptic nationalist in power since 2010, faces his toughest re-election bid, with independent polls suggesting his Fidesz party may lose to centre-right challenger Peter Magyar's Tisza party. Vance's visit, just days before the election, highlights the importance the Maga movement places on Orban's success. He was greeted at the airport by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, who described the trip as signaling a new golden age in US-Hungary relations.
