US Army Chief of Staff Randy George Asked to Retire Early Amid Military Leadership Changes

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has requested the early retirement of General Randy George from his position as the U.S. Army's highest-ranking uniformed officer. The Pentagon confirmed this development on Thursday, marking another significant change in military leadership under Hegseth's tenure. General George, who assumed the role of Army Chief of Staff in August 2023, is a West Point Military Academy graduate with extensive combat experience in the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Prior to his current appointment, he served as the top military aide to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin from 2021 to 2022 during the Biden administration. This action represents one of more than a dozen similar removals of senior generals and admirals since Hegseth took office last year. General George had previously avoided dismissal during an earlier round of leadership changes in February, which included the removal of Admiral Lisa Franchetti, the Navy's top uniformed officer, and General Jim Silfe, the Air Force's second-in-command. The leadership transition occurs while the United States is engaged in military conflict with Iran.
