UNS and Settanta7 Win Design for Turin's New 32-Station Metro Line 2

architecture-design · 2026-03-31

On April 2, 2026, an international expert panel led by Dominique Perrault chose a design proposal by UNS and Settanta7 for Turin's Metro Line 2. Collaborating with firms like Mijksenaar, Frigorosso, 3BA, and WSP, the plan conceptualizes the line as an 'urban river,' inspired by Turin's historical flows such as its rivers and porticoes. The project aims to enhance mobility and public space through three design pillars: branding, transit experience, and identity scales. Initially, 10 stations, including Mole Giardini, San Giovanni Bosco, and Carlo Alberto, will be developed out of a total of 32. The design integrates Turin's industrial past, cultural vibrancy, and gastronomic reputation, using a modular architectural approach that ensures consistency across stations while allowing site-specific adaptations through art and landscape elements. Three identity layers—Network, System, and Station—create a cohesive visual language drawing from local features like mountains and waterways, with a color palette shifting from warm yellows to greens and blues. Materials such as aluminum and porcelain stoneware, along with diffused lighting, aim to provide a sensory journey. UNS founder Ben van Berkel emphasized the project's goal to foster civic connections, making the metro an open, safe public realm. The jury praised its potential to reshape urban life and mobility durably. In broader context, recent announcements include Settanta7's Bosco della Musica regeneration in Milan, Concéntrico's upcoming public space interventions in Logroño, and RSHP's winning design for a low-carbon neighborhood in Paris's La Défense.
