Union threatens strike over extreme heat in Venice museums

The trade union Unione Sindacale di Base (USB) is considering strike action due to soaring temperatures in museums around Venice, where it has been over 30°C for weeks. They officially declared a labor dispute, which is the first step toward potential strikes, focusing on two groups: the National Archaeological Museums of Venice and the Veneto Regional Directorate of National Museums. USB argues that high humidity makes it feel like 40°C, posing serious health risks like heat exhaustion. The affected museums include the Giorgio Franchetti Gallery and the National Archaeological Museum, where broken fans and windows are an issue. USB claims management hasn't provided water or training on heat safety. Since last summer, USB has reached out to management, but a requested urgent meeting on July 1 was ignored. While the museums acknowledged the heat issue and mentioned sharing guidelines, USB insists they need written protocols. They are collaborating with Italy's culture ministry to address the heat problem while respecting the historical integrity of the buildings.
