Ulanqab's AI Data Center: From Livestock to Computing Power

Ulanqab, a city in Inner Mongolia known for its livestock and potato farming, has transformed into a hub for AI computing. The city's cool climate and cheap wind power have attracted Envision Group, which opened its Galaxy Campus AI data center there. The facility spans 120,000 square meters, equivalent to 20 football pitches, and can house up to one million AI accelerators with a planned power capacity exceeding two gigawatts, making it one of the world's largest. For comparison, Colossus 2, Elon Musk's US-based AI data center, has a projected 1.5-gigawatt capacity. The campus leverages the region's abundant wind energy, turning pastureland into a source of computational power for China's AI boom. The project highlights the strategic use of renewable energy in high-tech infrastructure, marking a significant shift for the rural city.
