Ukrainian Photojournalist George Ivanchenko Fundraises for Electronic Prosthetic Knee After Drone Attack

The Kyiv Independent's fundraising initiative has raised more than $63,500 to provide an electronic prosthetic knee for George Ivanchenko, a Ukrainian photojournalist who lost his leg due to a Russian drone strike in October 2025. At just 25 years old, Ivanchenko, who began his career following Russia's invasion in 2022, was reporting in Donetsk Oblast when he was injured alongside French photojournalist Antoni Lallican, who tragically died in the attack. After receiving care in Dnipro and Kharkiv, he was admitted in early 2026 to the Superhumans Center in Lviv, a facility focused on military trauma and rehabilitation. There, he spent six weeks learning to walk with a prosthesis and engaging in activities such as archery and adaptive skiing. To resume front-line reporting, he needs an $80,000 electronic prosthesis, with the Genium X4 knee module—priced at $63,570—being essential. The Superhumans Center will assist with his medical care and rehabilitation, supplying some components. This incident marked the first journalist fatality from a drone in Ukraine since the onset of the invasion.
