UK Universities Axe 4,000 Humanities and Social Sciences Posts in One Year

An analysis by the British Academy, published in the Guardian, reveals that UK universities eliminated almost 4,000 academic positions in the humanities, social sciences, and arts during the year leading up to December 2024. The reductions primarily affected institutions outside the Russell Group, which accounted for only 110 of the job losses. Significant cuts were observed in fields such as social work (-9%), English and classics (both -8%), anthropology (-7%), and linguistics (-6%). Business and management saw a decrease of 930 posts (5%), while education and social work collectively lost nearly 1,000 positions. The British Academy cautioned about emerging regional 'cold spots' in subjects like theology and classics. Proposed job cuts exceeding 1,000 at Russell Group universities, including Exeter, Nottingham, Edinburgh, and Glasgow, were highlighted. Hetan Shah, the British Academy's chief executive, described the situation as a crisis for social mobility and the economy. Justine Greening, a former education secretary, emphasized the adverse effects on students from low-income backgrounds. Jo Grady from the University and College Union lamented the decline of humanities, while Vivienne Stern of Universities UK expressed concern over the future of humanities graduates. A spokesperson from the Department for Education stated that while universities operate independently, the government remains dedicated to ensuring financial stability.
