UK Government Unveils £12.5M Music in Libraries Scheme Inspired by Ed Sheeran

The UK government has announced a £12.5 million Music in Libraries initiative, co-designed with Ed Sheeran, to transform public libraries in England into 'music lending spaces' with free studio space, recording booths, mixing desks, and performance opportunities. The scheme was championed by Sheeran to Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy during a visit to Ipswich's Brighten The Corners arts organization. Nandy described Ipswich as a 'model' for nurturing music talent. Separately, the LIVE Trust announced £1 million for grassroots live music, raised by artists including Sam Fender, Wolf Alice, and Harry Styles, who donated £1 per ticket from their tours. The trust has supported over 100 artists since January 2025, including Sheffield folk singer Jim Ghedi. The government also pledged an extra £15 million to the Music Growth Package, relaxed licensing restrictions for music events, and offered longer contracts to festivals. Musician Guvna B, co-chair of Youth Music, emphasized the scheme's role in supporting young people's mental health. Tom Kiehl of UK Music welcomed the plan but called for further action on AI, EU touring, and music education.
