UK faces exceptional wildfire risk as heatwave persists

The ongoing heatwave in the United Kingdom presents an unprecedented threat of wildfires, particularly in southern England and the Midlands, which are deemed the most vulnerable regions. According to Natural England's fire severity index, by midweek, the high-risk area is expected to extend into the South East and eastern parts of England, while a significant portion of England and Wales will remain at a very high risk level. The Met Office predicts that the intense heat will continue into the next week, bringing dry, sunny, and extremely hot weather to many areas. Dave Swallow, deputy lead for the National Fire Chiefs Council's wildfire division, cautioned that these conditions greatly heighten the risk of wildfires, with the majority being ignited by human actions.
