U.S. Official Suggests NATO Relationship Review Following Iran Conflict

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that the United States might reconsider its involvement with NATO after military operations against Iran conclude. Rubio expressed dissatisfaction with what he described as insufficient support from alliance members during Middle Eastern hostilities. He specifically criticized NATO countries for refusing to grant access to military installations. This follows previous remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump labeling alliance partners as fearful and ineffective. Rubio made these comments during a discussion with Al Jazeera, stating that the partnership must provide reciprocal benefits to remain viable. The official highlighted concerns over NATO members largely rejecting requests to assist in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime route for global energy shipments. Iran had blocked this passageway in late February following attacks by U.S. and Israeli forces, causing significant increases in oil and gas prices. Rubio asserted that the strait would be reopened either through diplomatic agreement or by an international coalition including U.S. participation. The NATO secretary general has noted that 22 nations are currently working to restore access to the waterway.
