Two Queer Theatre Works Explore Fandom, Fame, and Legacy in New York

At Soho Playhouse, Morgan Bassichis presents 'Can I Be Frank?', a solo performance inspired by Frank Maya, an artist who succumbed to AIDS-related issues in 1995. Bassichis, a nonbinary performer, developed a fascination with Maya after encountering his brother at an artists' residency. Meanwhile, 'Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical' by Dylan MarcAurele adapts a series about closeted gay hockey players, featuring a trio of fans, the Susans, and songs such as 'Big Ass, Cold Heart.' Jimin Moon stars as Shane Hollander, with Jay Armstrong Johnson as Ilya, utilizing simple props and engaging the audience. Both productions explore queer history, fandom, and visibility politics.
