Two New Exhibitions at Pina Luz Explore Body, Politics, and Global Narratives

Pina Luz in São Paulo has launched two major exhibitions featuring large-scale installations by Brazilian artist Cristina Salgado and Cameroonian artist Pascale Marthine Tayou. Salgado's work, titled 'Cristina Salgado: a mãe contempla o mar,' occupies the Octógono space with a monumental textile installation using over 3,500 square meters of predominantly red and blue fabrics. This piece, her largest to date, examines the female body, landscape, and psychoanalytic themes, incorporating domestic furniture and maritime imagery to create contrasting scenes of contemplation and disruption. Tayou's exhibition, 'Pascale Marthine Tayou: Knockout!,' marks his first institutional show in Brazil, spanning seven galleries that correspond to international conferences such as Berlin (1884–1885), Yalta (1945), and Rio de Janeiro (1992). His installations, sculptures, and paintings utilize everyday materials like plastic bags, flags, and pencils to address geopolitical issues, environmental concerns, and collective existence, blending humor with critical reflection. Both exhibitions are on view until August 2, 2026, at Pina Luz, located at Praça da Luz, 2, in São Paulo's Bom Retiro neighborhood, with operating hours from Wednesday to Monday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Salgado, based in Rio de Janeiro, has a career spanning over four decades, while Tayou, from Yaoundé, has participated in prominent international events including the Venice Biennale and Documenta.
