Two Exhibitions in Athens, Georgia Showcase Beverly Buchanan's Multifaceted Art and Community Legacy

Two concurrent exhibitions in Athens, Georgia are presenting the work of Beverly Buchanan, an artist known for her sculptures of vernacular Southern architecture and a practice spanning multiple disciplines. 'Shacks, Stories, and Spirit: Beverly Buchanan's Art of Home' is on view at the Georgia Museum of Art until June 28, featuring key works like the mixed-media self-portrait 'Medicine Woman.' A second show, 'Beverly's Athens,' runs at the University of Georgia's Athenaeum until March 21, displaying personal ephemera, sketches, and objects that reflect her community-oriented approach, including backyard art sales and exchanges. Buchanan, who passed away in 2015, had a background in public health and medicine before dedicating herself to art, exploring themes of land, identity, and care through found materials. These presentations mark her first solo institutional exhibitions in the city where she lived for many years.
