Turner's 'Rome, from Mount Aventine' Expected to Fetch £50m at Sotheby's After Rome Preview
J.M.W. Turner’s 1836 artwork "Rome, from Mount Aventine" is currently displayed at the Palazzo Rondinini in Rome, where it will be showcased for three days leading up to Sotheby's Old Masters and 19th-century auction on 9 December. With an estimated value of £50 million, it has the potential to exceed its previous record of £30.3 million established in 2014. This piece, featuring an umbrella pine and the Tiber River, was originally commissioned by Turner's patron, Hugh Andrew Johnstone Munro, and was later acquired in 1878 by Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery, as a wedding present. Sotheby’s emphasizes its remarkable condition and states it is the most valuable artwork ever exhibited by an auction house in Italy. Following its time in Rome, the painting will be sent to London, Hong Kong, and New York.
