cultural-heritage · 2026-10-20

This summer, conservation philanthropist Louis Bacon has made Trinchera Reserve & Lodge accessible to the public. Located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of southern Colorado, this expansive 172,000-acre wilderness was purchased by Bacon in 2007 from Malcolm Forbes. Over nearly two decades, his team has worked on restoring six distinct ecological zones. The lodge offers 16 guest rooms within the historic Trinchera and Blanca ranches, featuring Southwestern decor that includes a Hemingway typewriter and Zane Grey books. Activities available to guests encompass alpine safaris and fly fishing. Trinchera is also known for its extensive Rio Grande cutthroat trout restoration, safeguarding over 70 miles of habitat and is recognized as a DarkSky Lodging Destination. Guests can reach the lodge by flying into Denver and driving approximately 35 minutes.
