Toru Ishii Named 2026 Ronin | Globus Artist-in-Residence

Toru Ishii, a modern textile artist from Japan, has been chosen as the 2026 Ronin | Globus Artist-in-Residence, a collaborative initiative by Ronin Gallery and Globus Washitsu. His individual exhibition, titled Tokyo Landscape, is scheduled to take place from July 8 to August 6, 2026, at Ronin Gallery. Ishii, who was born in Shizuoka in 1981 and currently resides in Tokyo, is known for his expertise in yuzen, a classic resist-dyeing method, especially itome yuzen (line yuzen), which uses rice-paste resist to create designs and maintain white outlines amid vibrant colors. His artwork intricately captures the lively streets of Tokyo, merging traditional textile techniques with modern urban visuals. Historically, yuzen was used to embellish kimono and obi.
