Toronto's Copper House: A Modern Garden Suite Inspired by Architectural Icons

Architect François Abbott of Fabrication Studio designed a 60-square-meter garden suite in Toronto's Bridle Path neighborhood. The client initially referenced Philip Johnson's Glass House and Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House as inspiration, seeking a minimalist residential design. Abbott created a distinct structure that incorporates a central core containing a kitchen, bathroom, storage, and mechanical room, with the building elevated on helical piles to protect tree roots and allow airflow underneath. The exterior is clad in copper, a departure from the original glass concept, chosen for privacy, aesthetic nobility, and its aging properties that complement the landscape. The interior features an open-plan layout with polished aggregate concrete flooring, ash wood millwork, and a light-filled bathroom with a skylight. The design emphasizes efficient use of space, with precise geometric details on the exterior and strategic placement of bi-fold doors for natural light and outdoor connection. The project serves as a guest house for the homeowner's adult children and their partners, blending modernist influences with practical considerations for privacy and environmental integration.
