Toledo's Glass Legacy Fuels a Living Studio Art Community
In 1888, Edward Drummond Libbey moved to Toledo, Ohio, following a local advertising initiative that encouraged him to shift his glass business there. Tedd Long acknowledges Libbey's pivotal role in establishing Toledo as the global center for glass production, with major firms such as Libbey-Owens-Ford, Owens Corning, and Owens-Illinois based in the city. Overlooking the Toledo Museum of Art, which Libbey contributed to, is his distinctive yellow house. The studio glass movement was initiated in 1962 by local artisans, including Dominick Labino and artist Harvey Littleton. The museum features a glass pavilion that hosts public glassblowing sessions and partners with NSG Pilkington. Currently, 25-year-old Hannah Bowlus showcases her exhibition, Origin Point, which includes various glass pieces, attracting artists who seek affordable studio space with historical value.
