Tofu shortage hits Germany as demand doubles in four years

Germany is experiencing a tofu shortage as consumption has doubled over the past four years, catching producers off guard. Taifun, a leading German tofu manufacturer producing 7,000 tonnes annually, suffered repeated machinery breakdowns last year, halving output in some weeks. The European tofu market, valued at around €630 million according to Mordor Intelligence, is expected to nearly double in five years, but the industry remains fragmented and lacks large-scale production facilities. Importing tofu is costly due to high transport expenses and low product margins, making it difficult for supermarkets to keep shelves stocked. Producers had focused on quality and local supply chains rather than expanding capacity. Tofu's popularity has grown among vegetarians, vegans, and increasingly among omnivores seeking healthy, sustainable protein. To catch up, Taifun is converting a former sausage factory into a new plant to boost capacity, while other food groups are entering the market.
