Tobacco Plants Engineered to Produce Five Psychedelic Compounds for Therapeutic Research

On April 1, a study published in Science Advances revealed that scientists have modified tobacco plants to temporarily generate five psychoactive substances: DMT, 5-methoxy-DMT, bufotenine, psilocybin, and psilocin. This innovation could lead to eco-friendly production of psychedelics for therapeutic purposes. For centuries, these compounds have been integral to rituals among Indigenous peoples. The research focuses on tackling mental health disorders such as severe depression and PTSD, while sidestepping environmental issues linked to traditional harvesting and intricate laboratory processes. By introducing the genes PvTDC1 and PvTDC2 into the tobacco plants, which naturally produce tryptophan, some altered plants were able to create all five compounds at once. These changes are designed to be temporary to deter misuse. In 2023, Australia sanctioned psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression and MDMA for PTSD.
