Timor-Leste Announces 2026 Venice Biennale Pavilion Featuring Three Artists

Timor-Leste has provided additional information about its participation in the 2026 Venice Biennale. The national pavilion, named 'Across Words,' will be overseen by curator Loredana Pazzini-Paracciani. Three artists from Timor-Leste will present works: Verónica Pereira Maia, Etson Caminha, and Juventino Madeira. Their contributions aim to highlight the country's diverse linguistic and ethnic heritage. Pereira Maia will show a significant textile piece called 'Tais Don,' created between 1994 and 1999. This work uses traditional weaving methods to reference the 1991 Santa Cruz tragedy in Dili, where Indonesian forces killed more than 250 independence activists. The piece incorporates alphabet symbols to examine ideas of national formation, spoken traditions, and how knowledge is passed down. New installations by the other artists include 'CUALE (Flow)' by Caminha and 'Fraze ne'ebé seidauk hotu (An Unfinished Sentence)' by Madeira, both produced from 2025 to 2026. These projects will investigate the development of Timorese identity from the viewpoint of younger creators. An accompanying publication titled 'ACROSS WORDS: An Anthology' will be released in 2026, featuring essays by various experts and creators from Southeast Asia and beyond. According to Pazzini-Paracciani, the exhibition intends to challenge colonial perspectives and promote a dynamic understanding of Timor-Leste as a continually evolving society. The pavilion will be located in the Arsenale section of the biennale and will run from May 9 to November 22, 2026.
