Three Artists Present Alternative Art Histories at Castello di Rivoli Exhibition

The second edition of the exhibition 'Inserzioni' is currently on view at Castello di Rivoli, curated by Francesco Manacorda. The show features three artists—Gabriel Chaile, Lonnie Holley, and Huda Takriti—who engage with the museum's permanent collection and architecture to propose non-chronological, polyphonic narratives that challenge conventional art history. Gabriel Chaile, described as a 'future archaeologist,' creates works using adobe, clay, and raw earth, incorporating anthropomorphic objects and symbols from pre-Columbian traditions to enact a symbolic colonization within the European context. His wall frescoes interact with existing historical layers in the castle. Lonnie Holley, an artist and jazz musician from Alabama, presents assemblages made from found materials like forks, fabrics, wood, and wire, often created through improvisation. His work, displayed in the Salone dei Continents alongside 19th-century colonial iconography, references quilt-making traditions from Gee's Bend and explores collective memory. Huda Takriti, a Syrian artist based in Vienna, presents archival research-based work, including the video 'Clarity is the Closest Wound to the Sun' (2023) and a new piece titled 'It is Always Midnight in Their Minds' (2026). Her project examines a never-produced film script by Franco Solinas and Jean-Paul Sartre, discovered in Eni's historical archives, which addresses Algerian decolonization and reveals geopolitical and economic interests. Through aerial photographs and projections in the Sala degli Stucchi, Takriti critiques technical surveillance as a control mechanism. The exhibition positions Castello di Rivoli as an 'unfinished' palimpsest for reimagining art historical narratives.
