Thom Browne’s Uniform: 25 Years of the Shrunken Suit

Thom Browne has built a $500m brand over 25 years around his signature shrunken grey flannel wool suit, which he wears daily and requires of his staff. The uniform includes a grey tie, three-stripe socks, and lace-up brogues, with strict guidelines for summer and weekends. Browne’s 2009 Pitti Uomo presentation featured 40 identically dressed models at typewriters, and a 2024 Milan Design Week show for a Frette bedding collaboration repeated the motif. He believes the uniform liberates personal expression, citing diverse devotees like LeBron James, who ordered custom suits for the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2018. Browne started in 2001 by shrinking vintage suits in a tumble dryer; early adopter Edward Norton faced mockery. David Bowie wore a suit in 2005. In 2018, Ermenegildo Zegna Group bought 85% of the brand (now 90%). Browne was elected CFDA chairman in 2023.
