Third Place Zine is a collaborative publishing project founded by creative director Xander Opiyo and editor-in-chief Gala Mendoza that examines the concept of 'third places'—social environments distinct from home or work. The publication investigates how built environments are utilized and could be reimagined, blending urban planning perspectives with playful design approaches. The inaugural issue, titled 'Parkscapes,' launched in 2024 and focused on neighborhood parks as accessible community spaces. A second edition called 'Movement Building' was released in late 2025, exploring how third places facilitate social mobilization and collective activities, featuring content ranging from political organizing to entertainment venues like dance halls and karaoke bars. The editorial team emphasizes joyful narratives, including stories about New York City's first Muslim mayor and the unifying power of karaoke. Design-wise, the zine employs an accessible aesthetic using common typefaces like Arial Narrow and incorporates colorful collage elements to engage readers. It collaborates with various illustrators, photographers, and designers, and is distributed globally through independent bookstores. The project aims to offer a unique perspective on urban community building, distinguishing itself from traditional architecture and design publications by focusing on social belonging and everyday spaces.
