Think Tank Proposes Playgrounds as European Civic Infrastructure to Address Social Challenges

The Copenhagen-based think tank 21st Europe has developed the 'Continent of Play' blueprint, advocating for playgrounds to be reimagined as essential civic infrastructure across Europe. Led by managing director Johanna Fabrin, the initiative argues that play spaces foster human capabilities that artificial intelligence cannot replicate, such as risk assessment, negotiation, and creative problem-solving. The proposal includes modular design principles developed with studio Spacon and aims to build pan-European identity through recognizable cultural symbols. The think tank is engaging with the European Commission and collaborating with playground company Monstrum to implement prototypes, estimating that less than 1% of relevant EU infrastructure budgets could fund approximately 150,000 playgrounds continent-wide.
