Thélyson Orélien: AI Accusations, Goncourt Exclusion and the Future of Authorship

publication · 2026-09-24

Thélyson Orélien, a 38-year-old Canadian-Haitian author, is at the center of a dispute regarding his first novel, C'était ça ou mourir, which was released in Canada in March and in France in August. The book achieved remarkable success, selling 35,000 copies within five weeks, garnering positive reviews, and winning several awards. Following Orélien's receipt of the Fnac literary prize, an anonymous account on X alleged that the novel was generated by AI, a claim that gained traction through Le Figaro's Samuel Fitoussi. While the AI-detection tool Pangram identified sections of the work as 100% AI, other software produced different results. Orélien's publishers supported him by providing drafts created before the advent of AI. Although the novel was not nominated for the Goncourt prize, it is still in contention for other awards. Orélien has also reported experiencing racist attacks in France.
