Theatr Clwyd in Wales Reopens After Major Renovation by Haworth Tompkins Architecture Studio

Theatr Clwyd, a prominent performance venue in Mold, North Wales, has undergone a significant transformation led by the London architecture firm Haworth Tompkins. Originally constructed in the 1970s and designed by R.W. Harvey, the Grade II-listed cultural complex required updates to address evolving requirements and structural wear. The renovation emphasized sustainable design, improved accessibility, and stronger community connections. A central feature of the redesign is a new three-story glazed foyer extension facing southwest, which functions as a reception area, café, and restaurant while offering views of the surrounding Clwydian landscape. This space is described as a 'public square' intended for socializing and daily use beyond theatrical events. An internal 'street' links this hub to various facilities, including art galleries and performance halls. Lucy Picardo, Director at Haworth Tompkins, noted that the project aimed to preserve the building's original character while enhancing its relationship with the rural setting and local population. The approach focused on retrofitting and reusing existing structures with minimal new construction to reduce carbon emissions. The revitalization coincides with the theater's 50th anniversary, marking a milestone in its history as Wales' largest producing theater. The updated venue now provides modern, light-filled spaces that support artistic creation and public engagement.
