The Art Studio, Inc. Celebrates 40+ Years as Beaumont Creative Hub
Founded in 1983 by Greg Busceme, Sr., The Art Studio, Inc. (TASI) in Beaumont, Texas, has grown from a small ceramics studio into a 30,000-square-foot nonprofit arts institution. Originally located on Milan Street, TASI moved to an 8,000-square-foot former department store, then to a 20,000-square-foot space, and finally purchased an old Plowden Supply warehouse. The organization now offers multiple exhibition spaces, ceramics studios, a darkroom, a life drawing classroom, and hosts monthly band nights. Early supporters included artists Keith Carter, Steve Hodges, Maudee Carron, Sandy Laurette, and Charlie Stagg. TASI also fostered the poetry group Thought Crime, which continues today. Busceme, who earned his MFA in Ceramics from Washington University in St. Louis, credits the idea of reusing temporary spaces from his grad school experience. Despite challenges such as hurricanes and financial constraints, TASI remains committed to fostering creativity across all mediums, including theater and writing. The organization recently held a mental health-themed exhibition open to public submission. Busceme continues to lead volunteers and over 50 tenants, ensuring TASI's role as a vital part of Southeast Texas's arts ecosystem.
