Thames & Hudson Celebrates 75 Years with Monograph on Publishing Legacy

Thames & Hudson, the publishing house established in 1949 by Eva and Walter Neurath, is marking its 75th anniversary with a new monograph titled 'The Art of the Book: 75 Years of Thames & Hudson.' The volume aims to document both the extensive range of the company's publications and the artistic choices and methods that have influenced publishing development over decades. Tristan de Lancey, who joined the firm in 2011 and became creative director in 2021, initiated this project to highlight the publisher's core philosophy alongside its tangible works. He notes that during editorial discussions, a frequent consideration is whether a proposed book aligns with the distinctive Thames & Hudson identity, a quality embedded in its operations across diverse and expanding subject areas. This characteristic, he suggests, is integral to the company's culture and sets it apart within the illustrated publishing sector. The publisher has historically described itself as a 'museum without walls,' a concept that continues to resonate today. The monograph includes references to significant past publications, such as the 1958 first volume of 'The Complete Letters of Vincent Van Gogh.'
