Texas Covers Up 'Black Artists Matter' Mural, New Museum Names Gioni Director

other · 2026-07-08

Texas officials destroyed the 'Black Artists Matter' street artwork in Austin following an order from Republican Governor Greg Abbott, just over six years after it was painted. The Belgian men's national soccer team unveiled pink-and-blue away jerseys featuring René Magritte's 'Voice of Space' motif and the phrase 'This is not a jersey.' Trinidadian-born, Caracas-based sculptor Valerie Brathwaite died at age 87. The New Museum in Manhattan appointed Massimiliano Gioni, its artistic director of 12 years, as its next director, succeeding Lisa Phillips. Art historian Susan Owens published a new book on John Constable's relationship to weather and place. John Giorno's 'Dial-a-Poem' and other works are highlighted. A graphic novel 'Magritte: This is Not a Biography' brings characters from the artist's paintings to life. The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans 2027 offer up to $90,000 for immigrant visual artists, architects, and designers pursuing graduate degrees.
