Tectoniques' Stone-Walled Cultural Center in Vaison-la-Romaine

In Vaison-la-Romaine, France, at the foot of Mont Ventoux, Tectoniques Architectes has completed a cultural center enclosed by a massive stone wall. The 55-by-55-meter square perimeter, built from locally sourced stone from Vers-Pont-du-Gard, defines an inward-looking complex that houses a music and dance school, a performance hall, and a children's activity center. The design draws on the cloister, Roman domus, and Provençal mas, responding to its fragmented peri-urban context on former vineyard land. Within the enclosure, three distinct volumes—two four-sided pyramids and a half-cylinder—rise above the horizontal building. The performance hall sits beneath the half-cylinder vault, while the pyramidal forms bring zenithal light into dance studios. Timber wings flank a central courtyard designed as a Mediterranean garden and multi-sports pitch, with a peripheral gallery of slender galvanized steel columns providing circulation. Passive environmental strategies include natural ventilation, timber slatted panels for secure night cooling, and a geothermal system with underfloor heating and cooling. The stone enclosure protects from the mistral and provides thermal mass, while pergolas and planted strips with jasmine, clematis, honeysuckle, and lavender create a shaded intermediate layer.
