td-Atelier Renovates Meiji-Era Iwakura Folk House in Kyoto

A traditional farmhouse in Iwakura, Kyoto City, has been renovated by td-Atelier, with completion scheduled for 2025. The project, led by architects Masaharu Tada and Shojiro Endo, involves a 150-square-meter structure believed to date from the late Edo to Meiji period. Research indicates it follows the Iwakura-type minka design, featuring a linear earthen-floored passage and a robust timber beam structure. Extensions and alterations were previously made in the 1970s. The design team includes Ayane Abe, with landscape architecture by Michikusa,co.Ltd. and photography by Kohei Matsumura. Products from manufacturers IRIS OHYAMA, Panasonic, Sanei, Toto, and toolbox were utilized. Miwa Negoro curated the project.
