Tamron 12-20mm f/2.8 Lens Review: Rebranded Ultra-Wide Zoom

Tamron has introduced a new 12-20mm f/2.8 lens for Sony E-mount and Nikon Z-mount, marking a rebranding of its entire lens lineup. Priced at $1,800 for the Nikon version and $1,700 for Sony, the lens is compact and lightweight at just over 20 ounces. It features a fixed lens hood, full weather sealing, a USB-C port for customization via the Tamron Lens Utility app, and a 12-blade aperture for dramatic sunstars. Optical performance is strong with well-controlled flare and ghosting, but the lens exhibits heavy field curvature at the 20mm range, harsh bokeh, and noticeable vignetting wide open. Sharpness is decent at 12mm f/2.8, improving when stopped down, though corners remain soft. At 20mm, center sharpness is slightly weaker, and field curvature causes soft corners when stopped down. The lens is well-corrected for sagittal coma, making it suitable for astrophotography, and shows minimal focus breathing for video use. Tamron's redesign includes a new matte black finish and textured control rings. The lens offers excellent value compared to alternatives like the Sony 12-24mm f/2.8 G Master, which is nearly twice the price and larger. The review was conducted on a Nikon Z8.
