Sycamore Gap Tree Regrows Three Years After Illegal Felling at Hadrian's Wall
New growth has emerged from the stump of the Sycamore Gap tree for the third year in a row, following its illegal felling three years ago. This iconic tree, which had stood for almost 200 years along Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland, was cut down on September 28, 2023. Daniel Graham and Adam Carruthers received prison sentences of four years and three months for the crime, with Carruthers released earlier this year to complete his sentence at home. The tree, which appeared in the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, was honored as the English Tree of the Year in 2016. Currently, the new shoots have grown to heights of 2 to 3 feet, safeguarded by a protective fence, while the National Trust has cultivated 49 "Trees of Hope" from its original trunk.
