Swiss Museums Secure SFr100,000 to Trace Provenance of 6,300 Cameroonian Objects
On 29 September, nine museums in Switzerland were awarded SFr100,000 (£91,000) to investigate the origins of more than 6,300 artifacts from Cameroon. The Swiss Federal Office of Culture disclosed the funding aimed at exploring the acquisition histories and cultural significance of these items in Cameroon. Among the participating institutions are the Museum der Kulturen Basel, Musée d'ethnographie de Genève, and Bernisches Historisches Museum. Researcher Isabella Bozsa from Basel points out that earlier German initiatives have sparked greater interest in Cameroon. Cameroonian prince Legrand Tchatchouang stresses the importance of incorporating Cameroonian viewpoints, cautioning against a Eurocentric lens. He notes that over 300 items from the Bangoua community, including those related to traditional medicine, are involved. Collaboration with local partners is anticipated.
