Swiss Embassy in Seoul Blends Hanok Architecture with Sustainable Design

Switzerland's embassy in Seoul, which opened in 2019, incorporates design elements from traditional Korean hanok houses while implementing Swiss sustainability features. Designed by architecture studio Burckhardt, the building forms a horseshoe shape around a central courtyard with views of Gyeonghuigung park. Ambassador Nadine Olivieri Lozano notes the structure serves as a diplomatic symbol of connection between the two nations, hosting various cultural events. The embassy's concrete surfaces feature wood-grain imprints reminiscent of Swiss architectural styles. The building stands in Seoul's Songwol-dong neighborhood, an area redeveloped in the 2010s.
