Swapmeet's Maxwell Elphick on Adelaide origins and debut album Mount Zero

Swapmeet, an Adelaide/Tarntanya-based band, is set to release their debut album Mount Zero. In an interview, Maxwell Elphick recounts the band's formation: he met Josh Doherty in high school in 2016, they bonded over music in 2019, and later recruited Venus O'Broin for a photoshoot in early 2020. Jack Medlyn joined after a chance meeting at an end-of-year school event. The album title references a mountain on the highway between Adelaide and Melbourne/Naarm, symbolizing a 'leaving home' moment. Elphick notes that Adelaide's post-COVID local scene, where audiences couldn't dance, pushed bands to focus on live antics. The band rehearses and records in Belair, where they also host a New Year's Eve festival. They plan to leave Adelaide to seek new experiences. The album is described as a guitar-driven road trip.
