Suñol Soler Collection Exhibition at Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga

An exhibition titled 'Archipiélago. Cartografía imaginaria de la Colección Suñol Soler (1960-1980)' is currently on view at the Museo Carmen Thyssen in Málaga, Spain. The show presents 45 artworks from the Suñol Soler Collection, a major private holding of contemporary art in Catalonia and Spain, featuring pieces created between the 1960s and 1980s. The collection itself includes works by over 250 artists, primarily Spanish with international recognition, and spans from 1915 to 2006. The exhibition is curated by Bárbara García Menéndez and Alberto Gil, who have organized the selection around five thematic concepts that reflect the collection's core interests: individual identity crises, nature as inspiration, essential forms, visual communication signs, and artistic materiality. These themes are presented as autonomous sections within the exhibition, yet together they aim to map Spanish artistic modernity from late Francoism through early democracy, covering transitions from informalism to geometric abstraction, Pop art influences, liberated painting of the 1980s, and conceptual or neo-expressionist trends. The displayed artists include notable figures such as Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Joan Miró, Antoni Tàpies, Luis Gordillo, Eduardo Chillida, and many others, totaling 35 creators. The Suñol Soler Collection was initiated by Josep Suñol, a Barcelona-based businessman and lawyer, who began acquiring works through connections with gallerists like Fernando Vijande. The collection was initially housed in his residence, Les Escales, designed by architect Josep Lluis Sert, before moving to a dedicated gallery space in 1979, which later became the foundation's home. The exhibition not only showcases artworks but also aims to reveal the intricacies of collection-building, emphasizing acquisition decisions, attention to diverse artistic languages, and dialogues between Spanish and foreign artists during the dictatorship period. It highlights the coexistence of established masters with less-known or riskier artistic trajectories. The exhibition runs from March 28 to September 6, 2026.
