Suno Raises $400M at $5.4B Valuation, Doubling Market Cap in Six Months
Suno, a prominent platform for AI music generation, has successfully secured $400 million, elevating its post-money valuation to $5.4 billion, which is more than double its previous valuation of $2.45 billion in just half a year. The funding round was spearheaded by Bond Capital, with contributions from IVP, Forerunner, Union Square Ventures, Alkeon, Quiet, Matrix, Lightspeed, Menlo Ventures, and Schroders Capital. While the company mentioned that "leading artists, songwriters, and producers" participated, their identities remain undisclosed. Suno is currently embroiled in copyright infringement lawsuits initiated by major music firms in 2024, with Warner Music Group settling and forming a partnership in November, while UMG and Sony pursue ongoing litigation. CEO Mikey Shulman highlighted the rising use of Suno by professional producers and songwriters, indicating a shift towards acceptance of AI in music. With over 2 million paying subscribers, Suno ranks as the third most popular app in Apple’s music section. A new model, developed with WMG, will be launched in the coming months, marking its first industry-sanctioned initiative since its inception in 2021. However, actual usage of fully AI-generated music remains minimal, as Deezer reported that 85% of AI music on its platform is fraudulent, and Apple Music indicated that AI-generated tracks account for less than 1% of weekly consumption.
