Study: Semantic Knowledge Is Key to Human Innovation

A study published in PNAS by researchers at Karolinska Institutet and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam reveals that semantic knowledge—the internal cognitive map of how concepts connect—is essential for human innovation. Over 1,200 participants played a computer game combining items; those with familiar objects outperformed those with abstract symbols, matching random bots without semantic context. Groups with both semantic knowledge and social learning produced twice as many innovations as those with social learning alone. The research, funded by the ERC and the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, indicates that cultural transmission passes down a conceptual toolbox, not just inventions. Next, the team will explore how strong semantic priors can hinder breakthroughs by causing innovators to overlook counterintuitive discoveries.
