Study Finds Sharks in Bahamas Waters Contaminated with Pharmaceuticals and Illicit Substances

A scientific study published in February in the journal Environmental Pollution reveals that sharks inhabiting waters near the Bahamas are absorbing various drugs, including cocaine, caffeine, and pain medications. Researchers from the Federal University of Paraná in Brazil, led by biologist Natascha Wosnick, captured 85 sharks representing five species near Eleuthera Island. Blood samples were collected and analyzed for approximately 20 different pharmaceutical compounds. Results showed that 28 sharks across three species—Caribbean reef sharks, nurse sharks, and lemon sharks—had detectable levels of at least one of four substances: cocaine, caffeine, and the pain relievers diclofenac and acetaminophen. The findings indicate that about one-third of tested animals showed blood contamination. Scientists note that these contaminants, termed 'contaminants of emerging concern,' enter marine environments through human activities, with tourism in tropical regions likely contributing to pollution. While previous research has examined effects on invertebrates and bony fish, this study focuses on sharks, which play crucial roles in ocean ecosystems. The research team observed changes in biological markers in contaminated sharks, suggesting potential impacts on tissue function and behavior, though specific health consequences remain unclear. Wosnick emphasizes that legal substances like caffeine and pharmaceuticals are equally concerning as illicit drugs, highlighting the environmental footprint of normalized human habits. This work follows earlier research by the same team that identified cocaine in sharks near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, published in 2024. The current study uses blood samples, which reflect recent drug exposure, unlike prior analyses of liver and muscle tissue. The research aligns with broader investigations into marine pollution, including a documentary titled 'Cocaine Sharks' that explored shark reactions to stimulant drugs in the Florida Keys. Scientists caution that chronic exposure to these anthropogenic compounds could affect shark population health and stability, though further study is needed to understand long-term effects.
