Studio Drift to Open 86,000-Square-Foot Museum in Amsterdam's Oostenburg District

institutional · 2026-10-22

The Drift Museum in Amsterdam's Oostenburg district will showcase a 10-foot-tall installation of Chuck Hoberman's 2003 Switch Pitch ball, named "World Transformers," during its soft opening later this year. This piece, designed by Studio Drift co-founders Lonneke Gordijn, 46, and Ralph Nauta, 48, features a steel mechanism that enables two surfaces to flip, illuminated by lights and screens that explore utopian and dystopian narratives. Located in the Van Gendt Hallen, the museum also displays works such as "Shylight" (2006) and "Franchise Freedom" (2017). An interactive exhibit will incorporate bio-trackers to gauge visitors' heart rates and temperatures, enhancing a dynamic sculpture. Gordijn highlights the significance of adaptation amid uncertainty.
